Wow! I have so many emotions as I sit down to share this birth story with you! I started my journey as a birth photographer in January of 2015. The past 3.5 years I have had the honor of coming alongside so many families to document the most intimate moment in their lives. From anticipation of labor starting, to baby’s first breath and cry, to Mom’s and Dad’s holding their baby for the first time – I’ve watched dreams become realities and families grow.
Baby Asher’s birth was my last birth in Washington before we make our move to Charleston this fall. I had been anticipating his birth for months and finally the day came! It was the day before Mother’s Day and I had told Lauren earlier on that I had a feeling he was going to come on Mother’s Day. I ended up being off by a few hours, but hey, I was close!
Lauren and Nate, thank you so much for trusting me to document Asher’s birth. Seeing you two work as a team to bring him into this world is something I’ll never forget and I hope you won’t either. It’s true what they say, the days are long but the years are short. Embrace every moment as it comes, this is just the beginning of a beautiful adventure called parenthood!
I want to let Lauren share her and Asher’s birth story because it’s hers to tell:
“I woke up on Saturday, May 12th, to my water being ruptured. My husband, Nate, and I went to the hospital at 7:30 am and they told us we would not leave until our son was born! The labor was very slow moving because I was not fully ready to go into labor. They put me on several drugs to try to kick me into labor and finally did pitocin st about 30 hours of labor. The process was still going slowly at 42 hours, they decided to break the rest of my water. One hour later I had dilated from a 5 to a 10 and started pushing. Three hours into pushing at 4:50 am on Monday, May 14th, Asher Michael Hellum was born. He was 8 pounds 4.5 ounces, 20.5 inches long and very healthy!”
Throughout the two days and after, Nate, Lauren, and Asher were surrounded by the most loving family and supportive friends. To see how much this little guy is loved was truly special. Being the first grandchild on both sides, there was a lot of anticipation and I loved getting to know their family!
At this time, not a lot was going on so Lauren and Nate laid down to rest. Before we knew it, it was go time and the start of the most beautiful teamwork I have ever witnessed.
“I had a friend that kept telling me the moment I hold my son, I will feel like a mother. That feeling was so true! To be able to hold him, to finally meet him, was a moment I will never forget. It was also an amazing experience to see my husband hold our son for the first time, it brought tears to my eyes.” – Lauren
If someone where on the fence about hiring a birth photographer, what would you tell them?
“To be able to look back on the memories… that’s what makes it more than worth it to me!” – Lauren + Nate
