I cannot even begin to tell you how excited I was for this Charleston beach photoshoot at Folly Beach. About a month before we officially moved to the East Coast, I flew out to Charleston to do a few photoshoots but none of them were scheduled for the beach. I shared on my Instagram that I really wanted to do a beach session, not really expecting much as I don’t have that big of a Charleston following, but to my surprise Savannah with Boho and Bows reached out!
If you aren’t following Savannah, you should probably do yourself a favor and do that now. I told her the other day she is my daily dose of laughter. Seriously, she’s the definition of southern goodness and as down-to-earth as it comes. Anyhoww….about their session. We decided to go to the Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve at the end of Folly Beach. It’s a little little bit of a walk, but it’s more private and 100% worth it. I’m quickly falling in love with outdoor sessions and even becoming a big fan of golden hour!
This is probably a blog post in itself, but the Guss’ family session is the perfect example of the magic (and memories) that can come from letting your children be children! Right before we started the session, Savannah and Charlie let me know that their little guy, Benji, would probably try to run away the entire time. And he did. But it was also HIM and it was also perfect. If you follow me on Instagram, you know this is a topic I feel strongly about. Next to what to wear, it’s the question I am asked more often.
I get the concern, I do. We are parents and we want our children to obey, smile for the camera, and also not embarrass us. But without fail, picture day always brings out the craziness and they suddenly do not know how to listen or sit still.
So let me be a bit blunt Moms and Dads…it’s O K A Y! Chances are you don’t want to reallyyyyy be there either or have your picture taken for an hour. You know it’s important, but your kids don’t quite understand that. I may be a stranger to them and my camera most certainly is.
There is so much beauty in letting your children be children and documenting that. I promise I have tricks up my sleeve. We will get a couple of those looking and smiling photos, but after that, it’s games and music (with a beach dance party) and ring-a-ring o’ roses. Keep scrolling and you will see a lot of that! I want you to leave your session feeling like you had the best day ever full of fun and memories, not stressing over if your child smiled just right. Also, I’m not judging you or your parenting. It’s hard, but try to turn off your parenting hat during your session and just have fun with your children. I promise it’s worth it…and you did hire me for a reason!
I also cannot express the importance of having photos taken of just you, Mom and Dad! When you have children it can be so easy (and normal) to focus on the family unit and forget about yourselves as husband and wife. So as long as your kiddos are safe, I always like to take a few minutes and take some photos of just the two of you!
